We carry Hale, PlexiDor, and Endura Flap — not because they're the easiest to source, but because they're the ones that hold up. Here's how they differ and when we recommend each one.
Hale is what goes in on the majority of our jobs — and has been for years. The reason is straightforward: they offer the widest size range of any brand we carry, build quality that holds up in daily use, and a price point that makes sense for what you're getting. When we spec a standard door installation or a wall unit for a dog of almost any size, Hale is usually the first option on the table.
The frames are extruded aluminum, built in the USA, available in multiple colors. The flap system uses double vinyl with adjustable magnets — you can add or remove magnets to tune the seal for your pet's size and strength. For large and giant breeds, Hale's custom sizing capability is unmatched — if the opening doesn't match a standard size, they'll build it to spec with the same lifetime frame warranty.
Hale also makes an in-glass pet door for customers who want a true glass-mounted installation rather than a custom panel approach. We're actively adding this to our service offering — if that's what you're looking for, it's worth a conversation.
PlexiDor is built differently from the other brands we carry. Instead of a vinyl flap, it uses rigid acrylic panels on a spring-loaded saloon-door hinge — the panels swing open and close rather than flexing. That design makes PlexiDor exceptionally durable under heavy daily use, particularly for large dogs that hit the door at speed. There are no flaps to crack, shrink, or eventually replace.
It's also the most expensive brand we carry, and we recommend it selectively. For a typical household with one or two dogs using a standard door, Hale delivers equivalent performance at a better price point. PlexiDor earns its premium in high-traffic situations — multiple large dogs, a dog that genuinely hammers the door, or a client who specifically wants the panel system.
PlexiDor also offers a glass replacement option for French doors and sliding glass doors — a prefabricated unit that replaces the existing door glass with a new pane that has the PlexiDor built in. It's available, but lead times run six to eight weeks and pricing is higher than our standard custom panel approach. Worth it for customers who specifically want the in-glass look with PlexiDor's panel system.
PlexiDor also makes an electronic pet door — RFID-triggered, slides open automatically when your pet approaches wearing a collar tag, locks shut otherwise. People ask about electronic pet doors constantly, and our honest answer has always been that most of them don't work reliably enough to recommend. PlexiDor's is the exception. It's the only electronic unit we've installed with real confidence, and we recently completed a wall installation of one — our most expensive single pet door job to date, coming in around $4,500. It works. A recent Google review from one of our customers describes the experience about as well as we could. That said: it's large, it's expensive, and it doesn't fit every situation. If someone asks about electronic, we walk through whether it actually makes sense for their home before recommending it.
Endura Flap is the benchmark for weathertight performance. The dual-layer polyolefin flap — not vinyl — traps a pocket of air between the layers and uses beveled, magnetic edges to seal completely when closed. In terms of insulation and draft prevention, nothing in this category beats it.
We primarily recommend Endura Flap for sash window installations, where its design and mounting system are a natural fit, and for certain sliding glass door patio panel applications. It's our third most commonly installed brand overall, but first choice in those specific contexts.
One thing worth noting: Endura Flap carries the strongest warranty of the three brands we carry — a full lifetime warranty covering normal wear and manufacturing defects. The flap is designed to last significantly longer than standard vinyl alternatives, and replacement is straightforward if it ever becomes necessary. They're handmade in San Luis Obispo, California.
The right brand depends on your installation type, your dog, and your priorities. This is a simplified starting point — call us and we'll tell you exactly what we'd recommend for your situation.
